Where the sources disagree

The episode gives both versions, calls it a legend, or leaves it out.

  • Coin toss: Stanton (late Jan 1904; Kinney called tails, won, chose the marsh) vs Homestead Museum (Kinney LOST and was left with the marsh) vs lastreetnames (Feb 1904, 'according to legend'). Present it as legend.
  • Opening-day crowd: 40,000 (Masters/LAmag, Venice Canals Assoc., seed/HAER) vs 20,000 per day over a four-day celebration (Stanton).
  • Gondoliers on opening day: Stanton says the gondolas had not yet arrived from Italy for the 4 July 1905 weekend.
  • Canal length: about two miles (Masters; Stanton 'more than two miles') vs '16 miles' (LA County Beaches & Harbors).
  • Auditorium seats: 3,000 / 3,400 / 3,500 / 3,600 depending on source.
  • 1920 pier fire: 9:30 p.m. (Stanton) vs 9:50 a.m. (Wikipedia); firefighter killed 'Arthur Ranse' (Stanton) vs 'Arthur Harlan' (Wikipedia). Both put it 20 Dec 1920.
  • Race Thru the Clouds closure: 1923 (LA Conservancy, Coasterpedia via search) vs 1924 (LMU record via search, not read).
  • Annexation: vote 2 Oct 1925, joined 25 Nov 1925 (Stanton) vs vote Nov 1925, merged 1926 (HAER/Wikipedia) vs part of LA in October 1925 (LA County).
  • Annexation cause: Stanton calls the 'treasurer stole the money' story a myth ($22,000, returned in a week); Wikipedia lists the 1922 Peasgood conviction among the problems. No source read named municipal debt.
  • Oil well count: 340 (Stanton, All Night Menu) vs about 450 (LA County, Wikipedia) vs 'more than 400' (PBS). Last well: derricks gone in 1962 (Stanton/All Night Menu) vs last wells capped 1991 near the Pavilion (Wikipedia; that is the 1966 beach slant-drilling site).
  • Pier closure: midnight Sat 20 April 1946 (Stanton) vs reported 19 April 1946 (J. H. Graham).
  • 550 demolitions: 1964 (Stanton, Rudd) vs 1962-65 (LA Conservancy, City Planning).
  • Doors meeting: Venice Beach (popular telling) vs Santa Monica beach in front of Manzarek's Fraser Ave house (Wikipedia, citing his memoir); July vs August 1965. In NPR, Manzarek says only 'the beach' and jokes about 'Two Guys from Venice Beach'.
  • POP demolition: winter 1973-74 (Stanton) vs sat until 1975 (KQED/KCRW).
  • Venice Muscle Beach origin: 1951 'The Pen' (Pacific Park) vs 1963 (city page in seed). Santa Monica closure 1959 (Pacific Park) vs 1958 scandal (Hakai).
  • Canal restoration: 1991-93 (Venice Canals Assoc.) vs 1992-93 (HAER, in seed) vs 1995 (LA City Planning timeline).
  • Kinneloa acreage: 550 (Stanton, Rudd) vs 537 (Homestead Museum).
  • Stanton is inconsistent on Margaret Kinney's death: 30 June 1911 in the bio vs 'until she died in 1914' in the myths article. Use 1911 (Wikipedia agrees).
  • Stanton dates Tony Cornero's surrender of the gambling ship Rex to 9 Aug 1938, but his own photo caption says 1939. The fact is left out until checked.
